Kid Entrepreneurs. Is that a thing?

What kind of business can a kid even start?

You might have experienced being an entrepreneur as a kid.

Maybe it was just finding creative ways you could earn money for something you wanted to buy.

The truth is: You’re never too young to start a business.

There are many stories out there from kids as young as 4 years old that came up with a great idea that turned into a great business.

Lessons to be Learned

Aside from being able to make some extra money, there are many lessons that kids can learn when they start a business.

  • Creativity- Tapping into the right brain looking for inspiration. They will be able to visualize what their business can look like and how they will market it.
  • Problem Solving- Finding a problem and then coming up with a solution. This can start with finding a problem in the marketplace that they can solve. The same skill can be used over and over as they encounter problems that must be solved in the start-up and growing their business.
  • Communication Skills- Being able to talk about their business with others. At first that might be explaining their idea to their parents or asking for money to get started. Along the way they will learn better ways to communicate as they are selling their products or services.
  • Resilience- They will come up against obstacles and maybe even some tough times. They will learn what it is to keep working until you have moved past that time.
  • Goal Setting- Maybe it is meeting deadlines or setting goals for sales. This helps them learn to set and reach goals.

Applying lessons learned in school

  • Academic Skills- Math, language and spelling all come into play and stay with them in everything they do. They will learn to do research, budget and manage money.

All of these are great skills that can help them throughout life. Unfortunately, some of these skills are no longer taught in school- at least not in an obvious and purposeful way.

Young entrepreneur

It is the result of the pathway I traveled, from being a young entrepreneur at 10 years old to owning and operating businesses my whole life. That passion and experience offered me the opportunity to start coaching and consulting people who wanted to start their own business.

In the back of my mind, though, was the desire to see young people experience the joy of owning their own business- just like I did.

They may try many different ideas and that is even better. The skills and lessons learned from trying and failing and trying again cannot be measured.
