Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2021 – Realistic Goals

Set GoalsWe are now into week 4 of setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. So far we have covered Specific Goals, Measurable Goals and Attainable Goals. Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2021 has probably never been more important than it is today.

Today we look at Realistic Goals. You might Google S.M.A.R.T. goals and see that “R” stands for Relevant. In reality, using either one to formulate your goal would be worthwhile. I am focusing on  Realistic because it is a struggle that I see over and over.

We’ve looked at some specific areas you might want to set goals to give you the “Big Picture” in your business.

  • Financial
  • Products and Services
  • Marketing and Sales
  • Customer Service
  • Staffing

It is easy to begin setting goals and just let our imagination run wild. The sky is the limit and we might throw caution or common sense to the wind. It is for this reason that we address, head on, the importance of making our goals Realistic.  This does not mean they shouldn’t be a stretch. Rather, think of what is just slightly outside your comfort zone.

We are really at our best when we have set goals that cause us to look at problems and opportunities and we know that we have to come up with creative ideas and maybe work a little harder than we have before.

Setting SMART goals should not be underestimated in the power they can hold. That can come as it creates a unifying reason for doing what you do and making sure that it is alignment with your plans and vision for the future of your business.

Using the framework, and all associated metrics, and asking yourself- “Is it Realistic,” will help ensure that you are choosing wisely.
